The driving force behind the founding of Community Water Solutions was our belief that the technical solutions to the global water crisis already exist; they just are not being implemented in a sustainable way. There are a variety of effective, low-cost water treatment technologies that are available in most local markets around the globe. The beauty of the CWS business model is that it can work with any of these technologies!

In Ghana, we use two products to treat water at our water businesses: A coagulant called alum, which removes turbidity, and chlorine, which disinfects the water. Both of these products are sold in local markets throughout the Northern Region of Ghana.

After adding the alum, the women let the water settle overnight and then scoop the now clear water into a tank where it is treated with chlorine.

The next morning, the women scoop the water (now clear) into a tank where it is treated with chlorine.

Our water businesses do not use any mechanical parts or pumps. The water is transported from the source to the business by hand, treated by hand, and then carried by the consumer back to their home by hand. There is virtually nothing that can break!
